I’ve Still Got You I’ve sometimes said that there’s nothing that will make you wish for the rapture more than facing the prospect of losing the one you love the most. I wrote this song during the long months of Lorna’s chemo-therapy treatments, when we came face to face with the reality that we have no guarantee of growing old together. It’s become my Thanksgiving song.
There’s a cold wind blowing through the lilac hedge tonight Seems like Summer slipped away without a chance to say good-bye So curl up here beside me girl, we’re gonna be all right Oh, it’s a melancholy mood I’m in but I’m not gonna cry
‘Cause I’ve got you, and a leather-bound copy of a book I love to read I’ve still got you, so let those Winter winds come early I have everything I need, ‘cause I’ve got you
The boys both cried this morning when we dressed to go outside I said “we can’t go barefoot anymore, at least not ‘til next May” I tried to make them understand that Winter’s not so bad I only half convinced myself, ‘cause Spring seems much too far away
But I’ve got you, and two boys who call me Daddy I’m a lucky man indeed, ‘cause I’ve got you So let those Winter winds come early I have everything I need, ‘cause I’ve got you
I’m often good with words if I have time to write them down Or to clearly think them over and arrange them in my head But when life gets so uncertain, and the world turns upside-down The right words all too often go unsaid
But you understand my weakness, and you love me just the same And you somehow seem to know just what I mean You’ve been my inspiration, through the tough times we just had Now the road ahead looks better than it’s been
‘Cause I’ve got you, and the words of my new love song I’d love for you to hear, I’ve still got you So let those Winter winds come early I have everything I need, ‘cause I’ve got you... |
